Your Daily Ralph 12/9/14 The year in Review (Sorta...)

Hey it's been  a while, I know. But there's been a lot happening here in Ralph-land. To summarize: I continue to work on the new 'Cagliostro Chronicles' book which I had hoped to have out by now but its nowhere near ready. Then of course there's  new releases I had a hand in. This weekend saw the release of a long awaited project I had a hand in called 'More Blood'. It's an anthology of stories about Remo Williams and his mentor, Chiun, the series is known as 'The Destroyer' for the past 40 years. It's all stories written by fans, of which I'm one. I have a story in those pages and it just went on sale this past weekend in paperback. Kindle version to follow soon.

Next up I had a book come out that I also wrote a story for called 'Sinbad the New Voyages Vol. 4.' This was a fun story I wrote about the iconic sailor and his crew. There are other stories in there by other great authors like I.A. Watson and Joe Bonadonna,  It's a really fun book that everyone who enjoys swashbuckling fantasy will enjoy.

 

 

 

Then in late September I had my novel 'Hyperforce' come out. This was probably my favorite book of the year that I wrote. Fledgling superheroes thrown together against impossible odds-it was just fun to write and see come together. I love this book! A young alien prince makes a crash landing on Earth with his terrible enemy right behind him. When he does he triggers an event that will change the face of humanity as several nascent super-hero's-the first of their kind-must band together to stop this deadly threat. But this is just the first of many that will push these young heroes to their limits and beyond!

 

 

Another book I had a story in was 'Rat-a-Tat' An anthology of hard hitting short pulp stories. My contribution 'Caliber' is about a female former soldier who discovers her husband's been murdered. She knows who's responsible and she knows what she has to do. It's an action packed thrill ride through a sleazy town named 'Riverburgh' that will feature prominently in future pulp stories I have in mind. Check it out for some tough chick action.

 

 

And of course in early July there was the second Cagliostro Chronicles book. My sci-fi  Space opera seems to be everyone's favorite of my books, I'm fine with that. I love writing these. They're larger than life and I know it. They are huge space operas written for fun and excitement, and that's the way they are going to remain. The next one coming soon is no exception. This one deals with the Cagliostro making an emergency landing on an uncharted world  where an incredible amount of danger is discovered, not just to the Cagliostro and crew, but to Earth's continued survival as well! It's a thrill ride of cosmic proportions!



 

The first book I had come out this year was the sequel to 'Redemption of the Sorcerer.' 'My Enemy, Myself, the Crystalon Saga, Book Two' is a magic filled journey to other worlds and other universes with the worlds most powerful sorcerer and his all too mortal friends. It's a thrill ride through dangerous worlds to a final confrontation with an all-too familiar evil with the fate of two worlds hanging in the balance.

Your daily Ralph- Working hard.

I'm trudging along through the next 'The Cagliostro Chronicles' novel at this point. It's at its mid way point right now and I hope to have it ready to be edited by the end of November, I hope actually to be done before that. I'm  trying very hard to have it ready for Christmas.

In other news I saw 'Dracula Untold' today and cannot recommend it enough. It wasn't a bloody horror movie, but more of an origin story and a great adventure that culminates in the final 30 seconds in today's world. It was brilliantly written and just a really good flick. Go see it, it's well worth the time.

So I was messing around with Goodeads.com the other night, updating stuff, and I usually stay off of goodreads. I have a notorious hate/hate relationship with that site. I do not like the readers there. Many there are pompous asses and wannabe writers as far as I’m concerned. They get a big thrill out of shooting down authors books there, for the most part. The average reader there thinks they work for the NY Times book review or something. They are horrific for the most part, and get a big thrill out of trashing someone’s novel. So I do not spend much time on goodreads at all.

But while I was there I did a few things on my very seldom used authors page there that I started almost two years ago. I came upon a question about writers block and how I get past it. My answer is I do not get it, which is true. There may be times when I just don’t feel like writing,. But that does not mean I’m blocked. Most of the time I can pick up and write just fine, wherever I am, as long as I have the proper content.

Content is huge. It is just something that cannot be underestimated. It may seem like I’m being arbitrary about this, but believe me I’m not. You have to know where you are going with a story, and you have to know what happens in-between that is the kicker. It’s like saying ‘I drove from New York to California.’ Or instead saying ‘I started in New York and drove though New Jersey where we stopped at a diner off of I-80 for breakfast. Then we continued west for five more hours, before stopping at the Quaker Steak and Lube. We had the hottest wings I’ve ever tasted there, wow! They were awesome! After lunch we continued on and after about ten hours of riding we stopped for the night in Ohio at a really cool hotel. We parked in an indoor lot and had a great steak dinner that night along with a couple of libations before calling it a night. That was the end of day one on our cross country trip.’ 

Do you see what I’m talking about? There’s a big difference between the two accounts. The reason is the content of the second account. Content makes a story flow and garners interest, after all, you have to be interested in what you are writing as much as what the reader will be reading.

So writers block may be something that has more to do with what you want to say, and the way you get that content across. It’s sort of all about not reading between the lines, but filling in the blanks that happen there.

Your daily Ralph- Distractions for writers...

Getting distracted as a writer is never a good thing and distractions come in all shapes and sizes. This was evidenced last night in an episode of the 'Big Bang Theory'. While none of the cast are playing writers, they are playing scientists  who, in last nights episode, were trying to come up with the 'Next Big Thing.' But due to several things going on around them they continually are distracted and unable to make any progress toward any discoveries.

For me it was a pleasure watching this show last night because I got to see Kaylie Cuoco who plays Penny, in a bikini. While I hate her haircut this year, man does she have a smoking hot body! Wow, just wow!

Oh what was I saying? Something about being distracted? See what I did there? I got lost in a different matter all together. I got distracted by outside stimulus. So guess what? I got no work done last night because that show was on, and several others.

What does all this mean? Well to me, I don't write with the TV on. Or Music or anything that could be distracting. In fact I do my best writing late at night when everyone is asleep, in a silent house. A house or work area without ANY distractions.

So all of you aspiring writers looking for advice, this is a great bit to remember. Concentrate on what you are doing and don't allow yourself to be distracted. If even ina  silent , distraction free work area you still can't concentrate then it's time to walk away for a while and come back at a later time to try again, because without any distractions if you still can't get any work done, it's just not the right time to try.

Your daily Ralph- In the depths of space, danger STILL awaits all mankind...

And thus begins the second volume of the Cagliostro Chronicles, The Cagliostro Chronicles II-Conflagration.

What's different this time around? Well, for starters the  crew of the Cagliostro is no longer so green or wet behind the ears or whatever. They've been at this two years now. The war with the Agalum is still ongoing, but mankind's fleet is now hyper-warp ready, so Earth has a presence in the stars. That's something the Agalum do not like.
When our story opens up. the Cagliostro is in the midst of a deadly battle in space, and about to lose badly. But if they did it would be one short book. No, instead they defeat the enemy ships but have to put in for repairs on an earth-like planet. Once there they discover not only prehistoric creatures and savage aliens on this strange new world , but a threat that goes beyond anything they have encountered so far. A threat so large it could spell the end of human civilization forever. That's just what the Agalum want.
It's another book filled with  high flying deep space action and adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat right through the final pages.
And the best news is yet to come, as I'm already writing the next volume in the series. People seem to really like these, as evidenced by a record number of sales for both volumes in the past month.
