Review of Chuck Dixon and Joe Bennet’s new comic and hero, The Horseman.

Review of Chuck Dixon and Joe Bennet’s new comic and hero, The Horseman.

I just finished reading the New Horseman graphic novel By Dixon and Bennet. I have to say I really liked it a lot. There was really no bad to this one. If I have anything negative to say, it’s that his background felt a little rushed. There was no build up as to where he got the inspiration to do this (I know that accident that cost his sister the use of her legs, but it was glossed over.) or how he got his equipment, and maybe a little more about him. What made him join the army in the first place? Etc. That’s the only bad I have to say, and it’s not so bad.

Now on to the good. This thing had some spectacular art by Joe Bennet. I think he may have drawn some Spider-Man before, at least that’s where I think I recognize his art from. But he’s one hell of an artist. The multiple splash pages leapt off of the book while Chuck’s dialogue was exciting and intriguing. You can consider this the first arc of the character; at least I hope you can. It ended fairly definitively, though it left the opening for another volume. It was extremely good and I read it in one sitting.

These guys are at the top of their game with this character. It was that good. What I loved about this, besides the constant action and thrills, was that there was no ridiculous agenda in it. That’s what kills modern day comics. This was just great storytelling. Even The coloring was fantastic  and moody! This was everything it was sold to be; a great new comic that had a solid story and was filled with action. This book was spectacular! I hope there’s a number #2 on the horizon, because I’m really looking forward to it!

The Coming (Again!) of Conan the Cimmerian!!!

Something great has been happening in comics recently. Jim Zub and Rob DeLatorre are doing a fantastic job on the new Conan series over at Titan comics. It's an absolute return to classic Conan that we readers knew and loved. Furthermore, DeLatorre is doing a bang-up impersonation of John Buscema's pencils on the new series. It's like you CAN go home again!

This has quickly risen to my favorite comic every month. Zub's writing has been top notch impressive and has left me each month, so far, asking for more. Or more accurately wondering when the next issue will be out. It's that impressive.

My only caveat so far was that the lead female character from the first 4 issues was killed off screen. But that can be easily overlooked, as the rest of the series has been spectacular.  If you love 70's and 80's Roy Thomas/John Buscema Conan, like I do, you HAVE to check out what Titan is doing with Zub and DeLatorre. Impressive is undervaluing what it really is. I can't recommend this one enough! Wow!

Journey/Toto concert 2/25/22

First and foremost, let me say upfront that I consider Neal Schon to be a great guitar player. I love Journey and have for almost 40 years.

But when I go to see a Journey concert, I go to see them play their beautiful songs and to listen to these masterful musicians play them.

But there's a caveat.

Neal Schon, who, as much as I think he's a fantastic guitar player, has become the absolute king of overplaying. He needs to tone it down a bit. His solos are now longer than the rest of the songs. He's constantly overplaying every single song they perform. Sorry, Neal, but it's gotten tiresome and played out. I wish the other members of the band, especially Jonathan Cain, would ask him to tone it down a bit.

Take Steve Lukather from Toto. The guy is an absolute master guitar player, but he's so tasty it's crazy. He does not overplay. The contrast between the two couldn't be starker. Schon is just out of control as opposed to Lukather who is totally in control and masterful at it. Ten years ago I loved Schon's playing. Now I'm just bored by it. It's sad because he's so amazingly talented. But instead of giving us little examples of that talent that wants us coming back for more, he just smashes it in our faces, continuously. He's, very sadly, become boring.

It's time to tone it down, Neal. I still am awed by your talent and skill, but you've allowed yourself to become tedious. Take a step backward and reassess what you're doing.

Tom DeFalco, Ron Frenz and Sal Buscema's (!) RIGHT Project!

I just finished reading a new comic that arrived in my mailbox this morning, created by three masters of the trade, Tom DeFalco, Ron Frenz and Sal Buscema. Between them, they've brought us thousands of pages of the very best Marvel and DC comics. A great thing is happening lately, people, with crowd funded projects. Creators from recent years, such as Mr's DeFalco, Frenz and Buscema (as well as many others on various projects like Chuck Dixon, Graham Nolan, Ron Lim, Bart Sears and Mike Baron), have struck out on their own and began creating comics the way real fans loved; not the political woke crap that's been out here the last few years. These books by fan favorite creators are instilling fun, escapism, and adventure back into comics. 'The RIGHT Project' is just such a book! It's just fun comics, the way they're supposed to be. I sat down immediately today and read it from cover to cover. It's exactly what I expected, just great stuff!  Definitely look into it, today. Tom DeFalco & Ron Frenz's The R.I.G.H.T.
